Regular Login: You will need a UCID number to do a regular login to the proxy server from off campus. Auto Login:
If you are logging into the proxy server via your bearcat online or blackboard account, it is now set as an auto login that skips the login process and goes directly back to the Health Sciences Library home page. Some University Hospital locations also have proxy auto login. You know you are in the proxy server if you see the word "proxy" in the URL.
The proxy server does not require any software installation. Authentication
is based on whether you are in the library catalog database. To check
whether you are in the database, call Circulation at 558-0127. Once logged
into the proxy server, navigate from the Health Sciences Library website home page to access UC eResources including
the Library Catalog.
Please note: The social security number (SSN) is no longer used in library records for faculty, staff and students at UC.
That leaves two ID numbers issued by the University of Cincinnati; the UCID (M followed by 8 numbers) and the 16 digit ISO number that is issued with a valid UCID Badge.
If you do not have a UCID number yet, you can get it by going to:
University Hospital staff: please note - 988 numbers are being used instead of SSN. If you need an ID card, please call the circulation number 558-0127 for information about how to get one.
Internet Explorer 7 and Secure Sites
Please note:
Changes have been made to Internet Explorer to make it easier for users to see that they are on a secure site.
University Libraries uses self-signed certificates by default. This may cause an issue for users who are running Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 or later. Direct navigation to the Off Campus Access URL is blocked by IE7 when self signed certificates are used.
The UC Office of Information Technologies (UCit)
provides the UC Remote Access (UCRA) service free of charge, for faculty,
staff, and UC registered students who live within the local
Cincinnati calling area.
Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides a
secure "private" connection between external networks and the University's
internal network (UCnet), to allow authorized users of the UCnet to access
private servers or restricted services from off campus, home or when traveling. This means that once you've logged into the Virtual Private Network, you will be recognized as being from UC and won't need to use the proxy server for off campus access.
Information and instructions for downloading this software are available at the University of Cincinnati's
"VPN Frequently Asked Questions Page."
