Daniel Drake, M.D.,  founder of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine,  adopted the fully opened dogwood bloom as the emblem for his journal, The Western Journal of Medical and Physical Sciences (1828-1839). The Center for the History of the Health Professions recognizes the dogwood blossom as a symbol expressing Drake's desire to build upon the rich history of medicine for future use and appreciation.
